❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
But when you think about it, who doesn't love a great salad? (A Steakhouse Salad is one of my favorites!) The wedge salad is a favorite I love the creamy salad dressing and the blue cheese crumbles! Salty bacon with fresh tomatoes to cut thru the heavy dressing - YUM!.
This is one of my favorite copycat recipes! It's so simple to make.
I've even served it for large groups because the Outback Steak Salad can be made ahead. One year at our family reunion, we had about 35 for dinner. I made this salad using 4 heads of lettuce cut into smaller wedges.
I figured it was safe because not everyone would eat it...right? Unfortunately, (fortunately?!!) everyone loved it! There wasn't a crumb left in the pan at the end of the meal!
🗒️ Ingredients
For the exact measurements for the wedge salad recipe, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- head of lettuce
- cherry or grape tomatoes
- red onions
- green onions
- bacon
- cup blue cheese dressing (homemade dressing below) or store-bought
- blue cheese crumbles
🔪 Instructions
- Remove any loose or brown outer leaves and discard. Remove the core.
- Slice the lettuce head in half and again so there are four wedges. Place the wedges on a platter, large plate or on individual serving dishes.
- Slice and quarter the grape tomatoes, dice the red onion and slice the green onion.
- Add the blue cheese dressing to the top of the iceberg wedge. (This helps the other items to stick,) Next, top with cherry tomatoes, red and green onions, bacon, and a spoonful of blue cheese crumbles. Sprinkle with fresh ground pepper.
🙋♀️ FAQ's
What is a wedge salad?
If you've never had a wedge salad it's made from a head of iceberg lettuce, sliced into four to six wedges.
What type of salad dress is used on a wedge salad?
The traditional dressing served with this salad is blue cheese, but you can top with your favorite - ranch dressing, balsamic dressing or a creamy vinaigrette.
How do you eat a wedge salad?
Iceberg lettuce is is served in a wedge and it's best to use a sharp knife to slice it into bite size pieces at the table.
What is the best lettuce for this salad?
Iceberg of course! I know many think it is a throw-away lettuce, but when it is fresh, the flavor is so bright!
Can this salad be made ahead of time?
Yes, you can prep all of the ingredients - fry the bacon, drain and crumble. Slice and dice the fresh vegetables, have everything prepped so you can slice the lettuce and top shortly before serving!
Should you wash the lettuce?
Yes, you should wash the lettuce before serving. The best way is to remove any limp or brown outer leaves. Remove the core and run it under cold water. Invert it so water can easily drain.
👍 Tips
- Fry the bacon and dice the onions ahead of time.
- A classic wedge salad recipe is a great make-ahead salad because the lettuce doesn't wilt as readily as salad made with romaine or baby greens once it's dressed. It can be made up to 2 hours ahead.
- Top your salad with a touch of fresh ground black pepper and a healthy pinch of salt! That pinch of salt is the magic ingredient that explains why restaurant salads taste better. It's because they are well-seasoned!
- In a hurry? Use store-bought salad dressing. Extra blue cheese crumbles will make this salad even yummier!
Variations
Really you can top this salad with any of your favorite toppings!
- cucumbers
- radishes
- bell peppers
- olives
- cilantro
- red onions
- nuts or sesame seeds
- avocado chunks
- raw corn
- frozen peas
- croutons

Recipe Backstory
My brother and my cousin Wayne have a thing about Wedge Salads. Both travel for work often and when eating out always order this salad. When they do they always post a photo on Facebook.
Between the two of them, they probably have 50 photos of salad from everywhere including the Outback Steakhouse Salad.
I've asked but I'm not privy to the joke? So.... I don't get it, but suffice to say I've seen a lot of salad photos!
