🍴 Equipment Needed To Make A Bag Roasted Chicken

The key item for this recipe is an oven-roasting bag! You can pick these up at any grocery store or supermarket for super cheap.

Once your chicken is in the bag and ready to cook, you will need a roasting pan to set everything in. Of course, to make sure your chicken is perfectly cooked, a meat thermometer is a must!

🔪 How To Make Bag Roasted Chicken

This recipe is pretty much hands-off. Using a roasting bag makes it ridiculously simple!

The number of servings can vary based on the weight of your bird and how hungry everyone is! For a 4-pound chicken, expect to have about 4 servings.

  1. Preheat the oven. To begin, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the chicken. Pat your 4-pound whole chicken dry with paper towels. Rub the 2 tablespoons of butter all over every part of your chicken and then sprinkle it with 1 tablespoon of chicken seasoning.
  3. Place the chicken into the bag. Lift the seasoned chicken by picking it up by the body cavity and sliding it into your opened roasting bag (*see note). Seal the bag with the ties included in the packaging.
  4. Bake. Bake the chicken in your preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 20 minutes per pound (*see note). It is done cooking when the internal temperature reads 165°F (74°C).
  5. Rest. Remove the chicken from the oven and allow it to rest for 15 minutes before carving and serving.

This delicious chicken is a perfect dinner recipe! Serve it alongside some mashed sweet potatoes and air fryer zucchini for a complete meal! Enjoy!

💭 Tips & Notes

  • Cooking times can vary based on whether or not your chicken was allowed to warm slightly (at least 30 minutes at room temperature).
  • If your chicken was frozen, make sure that it has fully thawed before getting started.
  • The packaging for the roasting bag says to add flour to coat the inside of the bag. However, since we are buttering our chicken it isn't necessary.

🥡 Storing & Reheating

Place any leftovers into an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Additionally, you can wrap the chicken tightly and place it into a freezer bag before freezing. Allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheating Bag Roasted Chicken

Place leftovers into a baking dish and add some water or broth. Cover the dish with foil and bake it at350°F (180°C) until heated all the way through.

❓ Do You Put Holes In Oven Bags?

Check the packaging instructions of your specific bags for whether or not the oven bag needs to be pierced. For this chicken recipe, I did not put any holes in the bag!

❓ Why Did My Oven Bag Melt?

While these bags are made of a heat-safe material it is important that you don't place them directly on the oven grates or allow them to touch the heating elements. Once your chicken is in the bag, you should place it directly into a roasting pan to prevent melting.

❓ Do Oven Bags Cook Faster?

Yep! Using a roasting bag does actually speed up the cooking time. The bags allow the heat to circulate around the chicken, retaining moisture and speeding up cooking time!

Yes, of course! I use orange and onion quarters in poultry all the time for aromatics. Thanks for asking.

How much longer would you need to bake if you stuff the chicken?

    • Angela @ BakeItWithLove.com says

I would add an extra 20 minutes, to start. Make sure your chicken temps out at the deepest part. Hope that helps!

This chicken is extremely juicy. I used a bag/seasoning combo and it was cooked (as stated) in about 1 1/2 hours. I just left it in the chicken juices and cut some of the breast for my meal. I’m going to save the juices and cut up the rest of the chicken parts for additional meals.

Yes, you most certainly can cook this chicken in a Dutch oven rather than a roasting bag. Enjoy!

Hi Victor! Most chickens will fit quite nicely on the middle rack, no need to move positions. Thanks for asking!
