  3. Mia Thomas says

Rylee wrote this about her dad.

    — (DAD)
your room is so cold &
    empty &
    still.
i look at your door &
    i wonder when you will
    appear from its
    depths.
    you always come back,
    don’t you?
    so why is everyone
    laughing
    in the living room without
    you,
why does no one dare to
    sit in your seat?
    no one is looking
    at anyone else &
    we are all touching without
    feeling.
we lay in your bed &
i try to imagine your body
    in this space,
    tangled in these
    sheets.
    lungs &
    heart &
    clever, clever brain
    slowing down.
    lights flickering,
    candles burning out.
    i can remember your
    face &
    your voice &
    your warmth
the last time i saw you.
    you were so, so
    alive.
    weren’t you?
    warm &
    big &
    solid,
    right beside me.
why didn’t i tell you everything
    i have never said?
    you were there &
    you loved me &
it was not enough to convince me to
    stay.
    how do we forgive ourselves
for the things we could not say?
    did not say?
    will never say?
    if i could,
i would say it hundreds of times.
i would say it a million times over
if it would bring you back.
    i love you,
    i love you,
    i love you,
    you were enough for me.
i was so, so proud of you.
    i believed in you.
    i need you.
i will never be the same without you.
you will be with me for the rest of time.
    i love you, dad.
    i love you.

Sorry for your loss. Critter was such a nice young man. I remember the fun I had coaching him in Babe Ruth baseball. Critter always had a smile on his face.
