Are mushroom grow kits worth it? ›

If you are successful, it is fairly worth it because you should be able to harvest, over time, more fruiting bodies than you would by purchasing the equivalent for what a kit costs. However, there are no guarantees, and if you don't put the effort in, or things go wrong, it will be a loss.

A: Yes, growing your own mushrooms can save you money in the long run. Mushrooms bought from the store can be expensive, especially if you consume them regularly.

How many mushrooms will the kit yield? This will depend on the species you choose. In most cases, you should be able to get three to four pounds of mushrooms per kit.

A smaller tent, such as a 2x2 or 3x3, can work well for smaller-scale mushroom production. Ensure the tent is lightproof, as mushrooms require darkness to develop properly. Set up the tent in a clean, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations.

While we recommend fruiting your grow kit as soon as possible, if you need to, you can store your grow kit in the refrigerator for up to 6 months! If you start to see “pinning” ,it means that your mushrooms are ready to fruit and you probably should not store them any longer.

Once mushrooms begin to appear, which can occur a few days to weeks after colonization depending on temperatures and spawn amount used, they will double in size every day. Mist as frequently as needed to keep the mushrooms from drying out at a young state.

The simplest way to encourage more fruitings is to move your kit outdoors. A change in environment or temperature shift can sometimes be a cue for fungi to produce more mushrooms. Take the mushroom block out of the box (and recycle the box!)
