This is arguably the summit of Cher's movie career, and while I can't say I'd give her the Oscar, I'm not mad about her win. She is funny, sexy and near-perfection (she exaggerates the accent a bit from time to time, but that's my only complaint). And the supporting cast is an Italian American delight! Dukakis, in her Oscar-winning performance, pretty much steals every scene in which she appears, and I especially love her scenes with the late great John Mahoney. And the music! THE MUSIC! Bookended by Dean Martin's irresistible "That's Amore" and containing some of the most beautiful opera music ever written, not to mention the perfect use of "Musetta's Waltz", it's an absolute dream to the ears as well as the eyes and the heart. John Patrick Shanley's screenplay is brilliantly observant, containing beautifully understated moments interspersed with the histrionics and grand gestures. A scene toward the end shows Cher, absolutely glowing, on a deserted street in the early morning hours, just kicking a can as she smiles and walks on air. By the end of this movie, I had the same feeling.
