FAQs

Does oat milk work in cheese sauce? ›

Dairy-free milk Make sure you use an unsweetened milk, sweet cheese sauce is not a good thing. I always use oat milk, as it doesn't really have a flavour of its own which really accentuates the cheesiness!

Can you make mac and cheese with oat milk? ›

Once the pasta has cooked through, stir in the remaining 1/4 cup of oat milk along with the vegan cheese. Mix the cooked pasta until the cheese has fully melted and has a creamy texture. Serve. Season with salt and black pepper to taste, then serve immediately while hot.

What's the best milk to use in mac and cheese? ›

Any milk is fine. I usually use whole milk, then add some cream, sometimes, just to make it richer. Then you add the cheese of your choice, and melt that, then put the cooked macaroni in. If you are used to using evaporated milk, it's because it makes the sauce a little creamier/richer.

Can I use water instead of milk in mac and cheese? ›

You most definitely can use water in place of milk in any pasta recipe including mac and cheese. It is how I make mine, in fact, and it is just as healthy and delicious. The thing is that it will make it not as creamy and perhaps less thick.

Can I use oat milk instead of milk in mac and cheese? ›

Oat milk is plant-based milk made from oats, and it has a very mild, slightly sweet flavor. However, it can be used as a substitute for cow's milk in mac and cheese. Oat milk has a decent texture and flavor, similar to that of cows milk. Add it in just like you would regular milk, that is, if it calls for 1 cup of milk, add 1 cup of oat milk instead!

Can you replace milk with oat milk in pasta? ›

Swapped in 1:1 for whole milk or water, oat milk will do just fine whisked into a roux for baked pastas, stews, and sauces. I regularly splash it into bubbling braises, reach for it when a curry's reached fiery levels, and use it to unite a chunky vegetable soup in the blender.

Is oat milk or almond milk better for mac and cheese? ›

Do NOT use regular/sweetened almond milk since this will make the mac and cheese sweet, which is hard to neutralize. If you only have sweetened almond milk, I prefer that you use other plant-based milk (such as oat or soy milk) that is unsweetened instead when making mac n cheese.
