Smooth Stone

This is the standard stone that most of the Minecraft world is made out of. When you mine it, it will turn into cobblestone. You can bake cobblestone in a furnace to turn it back into smooth stone.

Cobblestone

This is the first stone you’ll be able to build with and since it’s what you get when you break a block of regular stone, you’ll have plenty of this stuff to work with.

However, it’s pretty ugly unless you’re using a custom texture-pack. Bake it in a furnace to make smooth stone (you get XP for this!) and then you can make Stone Bricks which are much more attractive.

Mossy Cobblestone

Sandstone

This block is naturally occurring in the desert, and can also be made by combining 4 blocks of sand. You will also find sandstone underneath the ocean, so if you’re exploring some caves and come across a lot of sandstone, it’s a good sign that digging away a few blocks will bring you to the seabed.

Sandstone can also be crafted into two, more decorative, forms.4 blocks of sandstone combine to make 4 blocks of smooth sandstone.

Two sandstone slabs can be combined to make chiselled sandstone, which has a creeper face engraved on it.

Bricks

Bricks are made from clay. It’s hard work to get enough clay to build a decent-sized building, but worth the effort!
