UPS Tracking Package, Freight, Ground - 1Z (2024)

UPS Tracking Package, Freight, Ground - 1Z (1)

Founded in 1907, UPS (United Parcel Service) is the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. UPS provides a powerful competitive advantage that can help you earn repeat customers and grow your business.

UPS offer a wide range of delivery services allowing customers to post packages of all shape and size via their networks. From Ground shipping to Express, small packages dropped at Access Points to pallets using Freight networks - they always provide great UPS tracking so you can monitor all of your deliveries with ease.

UPS makes it easy to see where your shipment is when you track. Because they assign a tracking number (this is a number that typically starts with a 1Z) to each package, you'll know about your shipment's progress when it's scanned as it moves through the UPS system.

UPS Tracking

To track any UPS shipment or mail you can use the Package ID, Tracking number, or Delivery Confirmation Number. Final mile tracking with delivery confirmation is available if selected on applicable packages.

UPS SurePost Tracking

Since UPS SurePost is a contract-only service with final delivery typically provided by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), you would no longer be able to track the delivery once we hand off the shipment. Packages upgraded to UPS Ground service may also arrive a day or two earlier.

SurePost Track My Order

UPS SurePost is an economy service for non-urgent, residential shipments of low order value. UPS makes the shipment pick-up, delivers it to your nearest U.S. Postal Service® (USPS) and the USPS makes the final delivery, Monday through Saturday. UPS SurePost is an option for shipments of less than 10 pounds that require tracking. Time in transit is usually anywhere from 2-7 days and it’s available to customers in the United States shipping from the 48 contiguous states to all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, including P.O. Boxes and military APO/FPO destinations.

This shipping hybrid may be one of the most affordable options on the market, but a few disadvantages exist.

Ultimately, UPS cannot guarantee time and date of delivery and has limited liability in the case of lost or damaged shipments due to the involvement of USPS in the shipping logistics.

What is UPS Surepost?

The most expensive part of the shipping process is the final leg, which is known as the “last mile,” regardless of how far packages travel to reach their final destination. It’s expensive because it’s inefficient — deliveries are made in small quantities to many different residential locations as opposed to concentrated deliveries to a few commercial locations.

In an effort to reduce those last-mile costs, UPS created SurePost, a consolidated delivery service that uses the U.S. Postal Service to complete the last leg of each delivery to residential customers.

USPS has a mandate to deliver to every address in the U.S., no matter how far-flung. Amazon has long taken advantage of this.

UPS SurePost is a shipping service that utilizes UPS’s ground networks to cover most of the distance a parcel needs to travel, but relies on the U.S. Postal Service for the final leg of the shipment. It’s a cheaper option that, according to UPS, provides just about the same level of service as standard ground shipping.

UPS SurePost can be as much as 20 percent cheaper than UPS residential ground service, with similar service offerings.

Shippers and customers can still track packages, including during the final leg of their journey, with USPS. Parcels technically include two shipping labels, one for each service, but customers can see shipments move through both services seamlessly with just one tracking number.

SurePost also offers UPS customers two additional perks. First, USPS offers Saturday delivery standard to all its customers, including UPS SurePost shippers. Second, USPS delivers to every address in the U.S., which could give your business access to customers that UPS did not serve with standard ground shipping — including P.O. boxes, which UPS ground normally does not serve.

UPS SurePost Versus UPS Ground

UPS SurePost relies on the UPS Ground network. Parcels travel in pretty much the same way — passing from shippers’ establishments to trucks to warehouses, repeated as many times as necessary — until the final leg of their journey.

At that point, standard ground shipments are delivered to end customers by those big brown UPS trucks.

SurePost shipments, on the other hand, are dropped off at local post offices. Then, USPS trucks take them to customers’ homes or offices.

UPS Shipment Reference Tracking

A shipment reference is an identifier that you define by completing the "reference" fields during the shipping process. This reference could be a purchase order (PO) number, a customer number, a company name, a Bill of Lading number, or a phrase that identifies that shipment -- such as "10 crates" or "gift for Mom." Shipment references can be any combination of letters and numbers up to 35 characters.

For UPS Mail Innovations® shipments, a shipment reference is a unique package ID that you assign through barcoded information for each of your mail pieces. This information can be up to 30 characters in length and be alpha and/or numeric with no spaces or symbols. Package IDs should not be reused for at least six months.

These reference numbers are used to identify and track shipments as they move through the UPS Mail Innovations network and the United States Postal Service®, which makes the final delivery.

UPS Freight Tracking

Track the status of your LTL (less-than-truckload) shipment by PRO or BOL number. You can use our online tracking application to track your LTL shipments. You can also use the tracking application found on upsfreight.com.

Many necessary shipping supplies are available at these locations. The maximum value or Declared Value per package shipped at a UPS Drop Box is US$500.

What Is a UPS Access Point?

A UPS Access Point™ is a participating retail outlet, such as a grocery store or petrol station that serves as a convenient and efficient UPS parcel delivery and retrieval location. You can also drop off labelled and prepaid UPS Returns® parcels at any UPS Access Point location.

If you elected to have your parcel delivered to a UPS Access Point location at the time of ordering your goods, you will receive a notification alert via email or SMS when the parcel has arrived and is ready for collection. You must present a recognized form of photo ID to collect your parcel.

You can drop off any package with a UPS prepaid label at a designated UPS Access Point™ location. Depending on what time of day you drop off your package, it will be safely stored at the UPS Access Point™ location and collected the same or next working day by UPS.
